Thean Hou Temple 15th Lunar Day

In Taoism, the 15th day of the first lunar month is celebrated as the Shangyuan Festival (上元节), or the "Festival of the Upper Prime." It is considered the birthday of the Celestial Official of Heavenly Blessings (Tianguan, 天官), one of the revered San Guan Da Di (Three Great Emperor-Officials). According to Taoist belief, this deity presides over the heavens and bestows good fortune and blessings upon humanity. On this night, Taoist priests and adherents perform rituals and pray for prosperity and the forgiveness of transgressions. The widespread tradition of lighting lanterns during this festival symbolizes both the illuminating power of celestial light and the hope for a bright and blessed year ahead under the benevolent gaze of Tianguan.
